Emerge is seeking a Mold Designer near Rochester, NY, for a growing manufacturer of quality medical device products. This role involves designing, developing, fabricating, and evaluating plastic injection molds. The Mold Designer will work on high-volume production, pilot production, and prototype molds, collaborating with senior designers and the Molding Manager. Candidates should have proficiency in AutoCAD (2D) and Autodesk Inventor (3D) and a minimum of three years of experience. Our client offers a base salary of $65,000 to $80,000 plus an excellent benefits package including an annual bonus. Relocation is available.
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed drawings for plastic injection mold components.
- Modify existing mold designs as required.
- Collaborate with the machine shop to support mold fabrication.
- Design end-of-arm tooling for robotic injection molding equipment.
- Independently design production molds and prototypes, evaluating part designs for moldability.
- Specify and select components and materials for mold designs.
- Check drawings and models for accuracy and adherence to design intent.
- Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and recommend improvements.
- Produce moldable part designs based on engineering input.
- Design auxiliary equipment for high-volume, unattended production.
Qualifications and Experience:
- 3–10 years of experience in mold and mechanical design using 2D and 3D CAD systems.
- Higher-level candidates with advanced experience or relevant degrees may qualify for higher pay.
- Expertise in mold design, plastic design analysis tools, DOE, and scientific molding practices.
- Familiarity with injection molding components; experience with clean room injection molding is a plus.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D) and Autodesk Inventor (3D).
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with polymers (e.g., ABS, LCP, PETG, TPE) and injection molding methods.
- Familiarity with insert molding, 2-shot molding, and microinjection processes.
- Ability to lead toolmakers and create comprehensive manufacturing approaches.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
